Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans optional

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and fine salt until well combined, then set the dry mixture aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer on medium speed to beat the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and packed light brown sugar together for about 2 minutes until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  4. Beat the eggs and pure vanilla extract into the butter and sugar mixture until they are fully incorporated and the batter looks smooth.
  5. Gradually add the reserved dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until no white streaks of flour remain, being careful not to overmix.
  6. Use a sturdy spatula to fold the semi-sweet chocolate chips and optional chopped nuts into the dough until they are evenly distributed.
  7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading.
  8. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers appear soft but set, then allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
